Do whales (or any other "exotic" animal) suffer more or have any more right not to be used as a resource than any other animal? Of course not. So let's stop promoting speciesism and start promoting veganism to end all forms of animal use.
"Banning" whale murder in the southern oceans around Antarctica is in the interest in the Australian government because they profit from the whale-watching industry. It has nothing to do with anyone recognising that whales deserve the righ...t not to be used as property and everything to do with economics. It *might* look like it has something to do with whales, but it doesn't. And we will find that "bans" will come and go depending on who is in government and the profitability of keeping 'bans" in place. It will also depend on "free trade" and who will trade whale parts to countries who have "banned" these practices.
While animals are viewed legally as property, no nonhuman is safe.
Same can be said for "banning" live export. Live export is expected to increase 70% this year. Think of the endless live export campaigns and the millions in donations with not one mention of veganism.
Same can be said for "banning" fur.
Fur sales have increased greatly in recent years despite the endless (and sexist) fur campaigns.
What does it say? That single issue campaigns are not only speciesist, but they do not work.
Single issue campaigns are fundraisers for large animal orgs that do not have veganism as their moral baseline. They ask for your money, but don't ask you to go vegan. So let's stop promoting single issue campaigns, stop giving away our money to bloated speciesist large animal orgs (that do not have veganism as their moral baseline) like Mercy for Animals, PeTA etc) , and start taking this issue into our own hands by being morally consistent and promoting veganism.
Let's become the movement we need -- a nonviolent grassroots abolitionist vegan movement.
ONLY when there is a significant number of *(ethical) vegans in society, will there be any meaningful and long-lasting change for nonhuman animals.
